Since my birth post-war, I can’t remember a time when the world’s been in such crisis. From the smallest island territories to today’s super powers, the story’s the same. Disaster. The Philippines is losing the battle, Australia’s Victoria yesterday declared a state of emergency, Melbourne under curfew, Covid 19 has roared back in Europe, cases rising yet again in the virus’s birthplace - China, and in the US, response to the virus’s deadly surge seems to be driven more by the coming November election - Republicans dealing with it one way, Democrats responding differently. What’s wrong with people? Why is everyone reacting in such an insular way?  During WWII, countries liaised, disregarding their internal, political struggles to work together to fight the common foe. But today’s threat is much greater. The world’s mix of free democracies and repressive, totalitarian states is actively hindering a common approach. For the good of the entire planet, it’s time nations stopped concentrating on their individual perceived ranking in the world and worked together as one.

When we live in a world of "I WANT - I WANT" then this sort of problem will not go away.

When World War 2 began, the world was just coming out of a deep depression and thus, we picked our sides to fight the rising foe of the extreme right wing.

But the generations of today know little or nothing of the so-called Dunkirk Spirit and when the second - and possibly the third and subsequent waves hit - guess who these people are going to blame?

Whichever government is in power - because they need someone to blame to make themselves feel good.

The only part of this pandemic - in relation to the United Kingdom - for which this and preceding governments MUST be held accountable is the fact that they did not prepare any part of society for the result of a pandemic.

They were eager enough to prepare us for nuclear conflict, but since the fall of the Soviet Empire, western world governments have become lax in their duty to continue to be on watch for terrorist activity, who is building nuclear warheads and more importantly, who has access to biological warfare?

Remember ISIS and the press saying how they were 'defeated'? No, they have not been defeated: they have simply retreated in order to reform. And which government is prepared to admit to their failing in regard to this particular group of terrorists?

Sometimes, I do firmly believe that United Nations is a huge political joke and it was formed simply to give the posturing victors of World War 2 positions of importance in world politics.

I am unhappy because I can't go to our local Methodist church on a Sunday morning, pray for the world in general and meet my church-going friends.
